Why Remote Work Is The Way of The Future For Gen Z

Table of Contents

Whether you like it or not, remote work is here to stay. Both hybrid and the full WFH setup have taken the world by storm, changing the way employees think about their work life. And from generation to generation, this shift has looked different.

While people of other generations had to transition from a conventional in-office 9-5 to a makeshift desk in their kitchen, most Gen Zers entering the workforce had to do so from their homes.

Remote work has proved important (and perhaps is a must-have) for Gen Z employees. Here are the three reasons why the younger generation feel remote work is the future, below.

Gen Z Takes WFH Life By Storm

1. It Provides a Seamless Transition from College to Entering The Workforce

The sector of Gen Z in the workforce today most likely attended at least one semester of college during the pandemic, meaning all classes, assignments, and tests were shifted online.Much like their millennial counterparts, students were forced to change their work habits on a whim.

While the workload of a student and full-time employee may not be the same, the required skills stay the same: discipline, self-motivation, and organization being a few. Essentially, students were accustomed to working from home before entering the workforce.

2. Gen Z Has No Issues With Life Behind a Screen

It’s no secret Gen Z spends the most time behind their phone, computer, or TV.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Gen Z spends half its waking hours, 7.2, behind a screen every day. This trumps Gen X’s time by one hour. Working from home would be no different, not to mention — it verifies working electronics and reliable Wi-Fi.

Similarly, Gen Z grew up during the rise of social media and online communication, which has been known to cause feelings of social anxiety and isolation. The option to work from home feels “safer” to those who struggle with social situations.

3. It’s More Cost-Effective

Going into an office requires a considerable amount of money. From transportation costs to business-casual clothes, the option to go in-office is an expensive choice. For those with a more disposable income, working from home saves a significant amount of money.

Additionally, in comparison to employees with a longer tenure, Gen Z’s starting salary may not provide enough to comfortably fulfill the monetary necessities of an in-person job. Gen Z’s choice between going into a traditional office job or working from home depends on many factors, but the choice seems clear. With the flexibility and familiarity of remote work, it’s no surprise Gen Z drifts from the pre-pandemic norm.
